Marlene J. Matthews of the providence Section of Scranton passed away Saturday at Geisinger Community Medical Center following an illness with her loving family by her side. Her husband of 54 years is David T. Matthews.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Michael Balendy Sr. and Gertrude Bruno Balendy.
She was educated in Scranton Schools and prior to her retirement she was employed for many years by Community Medical Center in the Housekeeping Department. She was a member of Mary, Mother of God Parish.
She enjoyed sewing especially making beautiful drapery, she listed to the Beatles, but most of all she loved spending time with her loving family.
Also surviving are her children, Kathlyne Kaschak and her husband William, David Matthews Jr. and wife Rosalie, Judy Matthews, Richard Matthews, Sabrina Matthews, Jeffrey Matthews and wife Tanya; four brothers, Andrew, Paul, Bernie and Charlie Balendy; two sisters, Jean Evans, and Liz; 12 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Michael Balendy Jr.; two sisters, Mary and Margaret.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Mary, Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 316 William St. Interment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery. Family and friends may pay their respects Thursday at the church starting at 9:00 am continuing until the time of the Mass. Please note that all CDC and church guidelines will be enforced including face covering and social distancing.
